Safe Science Experiments at Home: A Checklist for Parents

A simple experiment in the kitchen can be a child's first real connection with science. Setting a few rules in advance is enough to keep it fun. The checklist below sums up the basic steps to review before experimenting at home.

Share

Before the experiment

  • Read the instructions together from start to finish and talk about what each step is for.
  • Check the labels of the materials; do not use a substance you do not recognise.
  • Clear the work area, protect the surface and choose a place away from food.
  • Tie back long hair and avoid loose sleeves.

During the experiment

  • Let an adult handle every step that involves heat, sharp tools or hot water.
  • Never taste materials; if you need to smell something, waft the air towards your nose with your hand instead of bringing the container to your face.
  • Never mix cleaning products. Bleach in particular releases toxic gas when combined with vinegar or with products containing ammonia.
  • Wear safety goggles for any experiment that might splash.

After the experiment

  • Dispose of leftovers as the instructions say; make sure it is safe before pouring anything down the sink.
  • Wash hands with soap and clean the work area.
  • Review the result together: What did you expect, what happened, and why might the result have been different?

A virtual lab for risky experiments

Some experiments cannot be done safely at home. For these topics, virtual lab simulations let children follow the steps in order and see the result of a wrong move without any danger. Combining real and virtual experiments is a good way to feed curiosity safely.

In an emergency

If a substance is swallowed or gets into the eyes, take the product packaging with you and call your local poison control centre (in Türkiye, the National Poison Information Centre, UZEM, on 114).
